Ramblings on an Older Fandom's Potential Pairings (Goren Icon unrelated. But he is sex.)

So I've been doing a marathon watching of Stargate Atlantis. A few years ago, I'd started watching Atlantis (a few months after it'd been canceled, actually), but really only made it to mid-season four (um, because of the whole "Keller" thing... (yes, I am that shallow...)). But I wanted to watch it again. Unfortunately, I really didn't remember anything that had happened! So I decided to watch the complete series in one go PLUS I decided to tack on watching the last four seasons of SG-1 that I'd skipped (7-10 because I'd stopped watching after season 5 when Daniel died (yes, as I said, I AM that shallow--if I can't have my pairing and my favorite character then fuck it) (I had no interest in season 6, sorry)). Well, two seasons of SG-1 later and about 3 Atlantis seasons later, I came to the conclusion that, even though I used to be a huge SG-1 fan, I liked Atlantis better. Like a LOT better. I was missing John and Rodney and Atlantis itself and even my love of Daniel and his blatant flirting with Jack wasn't enough to quite overcome it.

That being said: pairings. John/Rodney is like a hit of crack. I adore their snarky little relationship--especially how John is able to decipher Rodney-ese, how he really tends to understand Rodney no matter how much eye-rolling he does at Rodney's expense. And, they are just too cute together. I love how jealous John can get of Rodney, I love how they play fight, I love how they react off of each other. So yeah. Really like them. Always have, even since the first time I started watching Atlantis.

There's something that Atlantis shares, though, with SG-1 that is rather unfortunate: it's insistence on focusing on chemistry-less het romances. It was obvious since the beginning that the writers were angling for a John/Elizabeth pairing regardless of John's opinions on the matter. Seriously, he was so completely blank during the "moments" that they were supposed to have. Not that he didn't feel anything but more that it wasn't the passionate romantic feelings that the writers were aiming for. But then, John's always had more chemistry with Rodney or Ronon more than he's ever had with any woman.

Speaking of John and Ronon, those two are adorable brothers in arms. I love the bond that they have. It tends towards being more platonic than I usually prefer but hey. Ronon's got that kind of chemistry with a LOT of people. He's just that kind of guy--bonding stronger than glue with the people he loves. He and Teyla tend to share the same kind of bond that he has with John: that extremely strong sibling connection.

There for awhile, I really thought that he had a bit of a connection with Jennifer Keller, though--Jennifer who I absolutely loathed when she first showed up, naming her "Dr. Barbie." She's kind of grown on me, though, (though I'd take Carson Beckett over her any day but I'm willing to admit I'm a little biased). I thought the little infirmary scenes with her and Ronon really worked (omg, I liked a het couple!). The episodes First Contact and The Lost Tribe really killed that for me, because you got to see how Jennifer reacted to Ronon's more...uh, barbaric tendencies? And it wasn't all that favorably. Ronon, though, he's got a little bit of chemistry with that gate tech that can fight or is that just my imagination?

Speaking of Jennifer...She and Rodney were really kind of shoved down everyone's throats in season 5, weren't they? They're mildly cute but it's just...a little off? Maybe I feel that way because John/Rodney is infinitely cuter but I think it's also because instead of having someone to just bring out the softer side of Rodney, I like having someone constantly pushing him to be a better person. John does that. On a little offshoot, of someone that pushes Rodney and has fantastic chemistry with him: Radek. That could go somewhere but, um, Radek...isn't my type? So, uh...

...Moving on.

Since I've broached the subject of het couples, I've really got to say that there is one that I think I really liked in the series. I don't even mind how it ended. Teyla and Michael. Yeah, Micheal the half-Wraith not human hybrid. It's so freaking obvious that he's in love with her but doesn't know how to deal with that fact. Wraith, after all, aren't supposed to fall in love. He's part human, though, and fall in love he did. I love the episode "The Prodigal" simply because of how obvious it makes their connection. I mean, wow. Now there was some fucked-up passion and dysfunctional dynamics. It was nearly completely one-sided on Micheal's part but it was absolutely wonderful to watch.

Anyway. / Ramblings about old fandoms. Ah. The life of a fangirl.

Aww Rodney and Shep :) I actually started watching atlantis and from there got into SG-1, so it's defenetly my no.1.
I agree with you on Jennifer/Ronon, I didn't hate that coupling at all :p And I think I would have liked Teyla/Michael better than the ad-hoc solution of introducing her husband randomly with zero buildup.

Here, have some pretty!

Mmm! Yay for pictures. ♥ It's okay. I love big pictures. And my connection is very fast. =) I adore John's crooked little smile. It's absolutely adorable.

I know what you mean about the whole Teyla/Kanaan thing (...Teyla is definitely the top in that relationship, I don't care WHAT you say). It was just retconned in and you're kind of left wondering "what the hell?" Plus...it's incredibly shallow of me to say but Kanaan's not exactly the most attractive guy around... >_> Plus we never really get to meet him, so it kind of feels like your daughter went off and eloped with some guy you don't know or something...

John!smile gets you through the most difficult episodes. Well, that and Rodney :p

we never really get to meet him, so it kind of feels like your daughter went off and eloped with some guy you don't know or something...
Pretty much, yeah ;) And he's so easy to ignore, they really wrote most episodes as if he's not really there. She suddenly has a token husband that's there when it's convenient. A guy with no personality to boot, not the best way to do it.

Kanaan is rather flat, isn't he? =| Teyla deserves better. And I don't say that about many female characters. Especially not in a sci-fi series. o_O

Yay for the John!smile. And Rodney. ♥
