Having contests between contestants is fairly typical, yeah. Especially when they're just starting out. It makes it so the 'star' of the show isn't picking just on looks or something like that. It's also a way of contestants to 'show' who they are (as in showcasing talents or how good they'd be for the 'star,' etc).
