Spriggan!

I'm currently downloading Spriggan!  That's right, Spriggan!  You bitches better recognize! 

:)  It's okay if you're confused.  I'm just excited.  I started reading this series back in HIGH SCHOOL and fell in love with Jean Jacquemonde, the French Spriggan (in this manga series, a Spriggan is a warrior this organization sends in when their armies are failing).  He's a beserker lynthrope that turns when he sees his own blood.  Any other time, he's cool and calm as you please with a slight crush on the main character (Japanese school boy, of course).  ^_^  It was turned into an awesome movie (which I was too young to appreciate at the time, alas) and then the manga was DROPPED from translation.  After three volumes.

Why?  Heh.  I'm guessing it has a lot to do with the fact that the United States is a big super-villain in this one.  You'd think that they'd have realized that BEFORE translation but whatever.  If the people that had attempted Escaflowne didn't know that Dilandau was really a transsexual (horrors of horrors, apparently), then I guess Viz could have not realized either.

And, considering the manga series was published in 1988, it was hard for me to get my hands on.  Fast forward 7 years and my love for Jean has been rekindled thanks to an awesome fic on the springkink community. 

Since it's never been translated past those first three volumes (the third of which was heavily edited, I'm told), I was willing to settle for raws.  HOWEVER, after scouring the internet, I could only find TWO sites that had the Spriggan series.  One which you had to join and make a certain amount of posts or another which would never load.  After spending a few weeks, futilely attempting to make the second one load, I joined the first.  Made my requisite number of posts.  Only to find out that Spriggan is currently listed as a DEAD upload and couldn't get it anyway.

I cried.  I wailed.  I'm waiting for a reply.  In the meantime, I said fuck it, I'm just going to buy the fuckers.  So I looked it up.  Do you want to know how much an original Spriggan manga is selling for nowadays?  $80.  For one manga and no.  I'm not shitting you.  80 fucking dollars for one fucking manga.  Fuck THAT.

So I cried again and waited around to see if I would ever get a reply on if anyone would be nice enough to share the scanned Spriggan raws with me. 

When the heavens opened and the site that would previously not load has miraculously LOADED!  Praise be to JESUS!  Now **crosses fingers** I wait.  :)  Hee.

It's a rather obscure, 20-year-old manga. I'm usually surprised when someone DOES know. :) Not even the people in the anime circles.

I actually have heard of it, but only in passing. I had no idea what it was about. Sounds like something I'd like, if it were in English.

And, I thought Viz was based in Canada?

The movie was based, I THINK on the second volume. It deals with Noah's Ark and all that.

I actually have no idea where Viz is based. You're probably right. It just may have been that they thought there would be no market for it (it's also kind of gory (but I've definitely seen worse)).

Heh. I was just randomly doing a Spriggan search via google and I came to your entry here.

I gotta say, I LOVE Jean! I haven't read much of the manga myself, though I know of a scantilation group that's working on it. I run a Spriggan Fans Yahoo! group and one of the members is involved in that project.

I love it when I happen across random Jean fangirls. It makes me happy inside to know that I'm not one of only three. XD

I don't have a super cool Jean icon... T_T

Yay for Jean fangirls! ^_^ Most people look at me like I'm crazy when I start talking about him.

But after nearly 10 years, I finally have at least the RAWs, right?

I heard there was a scanlation group that was going to pick it up. Are they going to be releasing anytime soon? And are they starting later than the first book? Because I wants four and five... :)

I believe the name of the scantilation group is Domo Scans. As for where they're picking up; I don't know, but I'm guessing book one. Which means it'll take them longer to get to where you were in the English, but at least they probably won't edit it like Viz chose to. How close they are to release, I don't really know. The user with the name "Ominae" in the club is the one involved. This is the clubs URL:

You could post and ask him if you like, or e-mail him. There's a bunch of fanart, doujinshi scans, and other things, too. :)

I used to have the RAWs of all but book six. Then weird crap happened at home and... now I don't. D: Maybe some day I'll get my hands on them again.

So, one of the guys in the Yahoo! Spriggan group is on a business trip to Singapore (which it seems is the only country that has published the entire manga in English...) and he's picking up a few books for me. When I get them would you like some scans? :)

I got the English Manga today! I spent a while scanning the first chapter of "The Lycanthrope Legacy", which deals with Jean's back story. I have posted it in its own folder on the Yahoo group. :)
